Planimate models are built in a graphical manner. Objects are arranged in a schematic manner. These objects might represent resources in a model such as machines in a shop or locations on a map. They can also represent steps in a process, such as points where things wait or the making of a decision.

Objects are connected together by flows. These flows control the order of the objects, like the steps in a flowchart.

The actual "run" of the model occurs when dynamic entities called "items" move along the flows. As the items move through objects they trigger an interaction. This be as simple as an item entering a queue of other items or very complex such as sending a TCP/IP message or calling a DLL.
